Sieglinde: (Calmly) His lips I moistened, I cared for him as any host would.

Siegmund: (Observing Hunding calmly and resolutely) For shelter and drink I have to thank her: would you chide your wife for that?

Hunding: [[ #68 ]] Sacred is my hearth: - may my house be sacred to you!

[Hunding orders Sieglinde to prepare a meal, which she does.]

(#67?; #63:) Involuntarily she stares at Siegmund again. (#40 or #64?) Hunding examines Siegmund’s features closely and with surprise, comparing them with those of his wife.

Hunding: (aside) How like the woman he looks! (#21 Vari on Bass Clarinet) The selfsame glittering serpent is glinting in his eye, too. (He conceals his dismay and turns to Siegmund as though quite naturally. #62; #67?) Far indeed have you fared on your way; no horse rode he who found rest here: what impassable pathways caused you pain?

Siegmund: (#60) … storm and great need [“Noth”] have driven me here: I know not the way that I came, whither I’ve wandered I know still less … .

Hunding: (At the table, offering Siegmund a seat) He whose roof is your shelter, whose house is your haven, Hunding’s the name of your host [[ #67 ]]; if you turn your steps to the west of here, in wealthy homesteads kinsmen dwell who safeguard Hunding’s honour [[ #67 ]].”

[[#69]] The Innocent Maiden’s Weeping

The anonymous, innocent maiden weeps over the bodies of her dead brothers who had tried to force her into a loveless marriage, after Siegmund tried to intervene in her behalf, in response to her appeal – bespeaking the contradiction between individual conscience and social mores
