  • [S.2.2: C] Siegfried refreshes himself with thoughts of forest and of his parents. Longing for mother  (#66) produces forest murmurs (#2/#11) and birdsongs (#128) (#129).   571-575 

  • [S.2.2: D] Wondering if a Woodbird is telling him of his mother, Siegfried tries and fails to understand it through feeling by imitating it.   575-579

  • [S.2.2: E] Siegfried inadvertently wakes Fafner (#48) with the horn he plays to find a boon companion. They argue: Siegfried plunges Nothung (#109) in Fafner's heart.   579-582

  • [S.2.2: F] Fafner: Who are you? (#51) Your brain didn't brood upon what you've done. Siegfried: I still don’t know who I am! Fafner: The person who set you against me plots your death. Fafner dies.   582-586

  • [S.2.2: G] Fafner’s blood burns Siegfried’s fingers. Licking it, he understands the Woodbird: (#129/#11)  You now own the Nibelung Hoard!  Through the Tarnhelm you can work wonders, and with the Ring you can rule the world!  586-590

[S.2.3] Outside Fafner's lair: Alberich, Mime, Siegfried, and the Woodbird      591-614       

  • [S.2.3: A] Alberich and Mime fight over spoils not yet won, and debate the merits of their respective claims to Tarnhelm and Ring.   591-592 

  • [S.2.3: B] Alberich refuses Mime's  suggestion to divide the spoils, Alberich  keeping the Ring and  Mime the  Tarnhelm. Mime: (#130) Not even  exchange or share? I'm to go empty-handed? Mime, enraged, threatens to have Siegfried sort Alberich out.   592-594

  • [S.2.3: C] (#17) Siegfried emerges from Fafner’s cave, surprisingly with both Tarnhelm and Ring. (#59)  (#12) (#16) He's forgotten  what the Woodbird taught him about their use!   594-600

  • [S.2.3: D] Woodbird: Thanks to the Serpent's blood, you’ll hear Mime’s hidden plot for murder.  Mime:  (#131) Welcome, Siegfried. Have you learned the meaning of fear? Mime unwittingly confesses his plan to kill Siegfried while making protestations of his  love and regard for  Siegfried. Siegfried kills Mime.   600-607

  • [S.2.3: E] Siegfried: (#132a) Woodbird, can you find me a companion? Woodbird: Seek Bruennhilde asleep encircled by fire. Siegfried: (#132b) O welcome song!   607-611

  • [S.2.3: F] Siegfried: Woodbird, what do I feel? Woodbird: (#128b) Delighting in sorrow I sing of love. Blissful I weave my lay from woe. Only lovers can understand. Siegfried: Can  I break through the fire  and win her? Woodbird: (#128b) Only the fearless can win her.   611-614
